![]() The most interesting aspect of the Cross books is not the murders, though the crimes do hook and surprise readers. ![]() That murder, like the majority of murders in Southeast, had never been solved. Three years before, my wife had been murdered in a drive-by shooting. On the bureau, by the bed, was a picture of Maria Cross. ![]() Over the sport coat, I put on my Georgetown warm-up jacket. It was a murder day, and that meant I’d be seeing white people. I had already decided to wear my old Harris Tweed jacket. I was daunted by the task of creating this character, but then Alex came to me, and offered a lot of stories to tell. When I first started with Alex, for sixty to seventy pages, “I” was a woman detective called “Alexis,” and her last name wasn’t Cross. I was the picture of contentment on the sun porch of our house on 5th Street in Washington, D.C. A lot can happen there-more than any place in the world. It’s a fascinating place, with a diverse population and a wide range of communities, that, from a crime fiction perspective, offer an inexhaustible supply of cases. Not only is the seat of the national government there, but also the DEA, FBI, and CIA. That’s easy – it’s the most interesting city in the county to set a detective series. Why set the Cross series in Washington, DC? I’m often asked. ![]() Kindle Notes & Highlights From Along Came a Spider Master of Thriller Suspense, James Patterson, responds to his most highlighted quotes from the Alex Cross novel that started it all: Along Came a Spider. ![]()

On a seemingly ordinary day in Wheelock, Jamie MacDonald, a cousin of Cameron's, drives to the police station and announces: ""My wife here, Maggie, is dead, and I'm the one who killed her."" Cam finds himself saddled with a murder case and a conflict of interest: his cousin has given in to the pleas of his cancer-ravaged wife to kill her, and he's come to the clan chief to confess. One of the reasons that I wrote my novels, along with my love of writing and my interest in the genre, was that I’ve found it increasingly difficult to find good Reincarnation Novels. For ideas about story structure and how to keep your idea going after a few paragraphs, I would recommend Writing Magic: Creating Stories that Fly and Brave the Page, even though they are geared towards middle grade readers. It also ends very abruptly, and lacks any conclusion or author's note that would share more information or encouragement.īecause this book focuses on the most basic introductory concepts, this book is best as an educational tool for very young children. When I was a child, I wanted insight about how to tell a story, and how to shape a story's unfolding events, but this book does not provide any advice for how to plot a narrative. This book covers different elements of creative writing, such as conflict, a setting, and a main character, but these are all concepts that attentive readers are already aware of. The advice is extremely basic, and even though this is a good introduction for a classroom assignment, I know that I would have found it frustrating when I was an independent beginning writer looking for advice for how to tell a story. ![]() ![]() ![]() This nonfiction picture book will be a great fit for kindergarten through young elementary-age classes, but has little appeal beyond that demographic. ![]() |
